Local Sports Roundup 4/22/14

Joaquin boys’ singles players Jimmy Smith is headed to the Class 1A state tennis tournament after qualifying last week at the regional event at SFA. Center boy’s doubles team of Adam Reeves and Alec Lucas will be taking part in the 3A meet. The state 1A thru 3A tennis tournament is April 28 & 29 in College Station.

The playoff bound Joaquin Rams take an 8-5 win over the Timpson Bears, improving Joaquin’s district record to 11-4, and Timpson finishes the season at 8-8. The Rams will wrap up the district portion of their schedule Friday at Chireno.

 

In other district action, second-place Cushing gets a 10-0 win over the Shelbyville Dragons, as Cushing is 12-3, and the Dragons are 6-9. Shelbyville will finish out the season at Mt. Enterprise Friday.

 

The Tenaha Tigers take a 9-5 win over Mt Enterprise. Tenaha will finish the season Friday at district champion Douglass.

 

Tonight, the Center Roughriders go to Carthage to play the state-ranked and district-leading Bulldogs. The Riders are fighting it out for one of two remaining playoff spots, as they’re currently tied for third with Diboll at 5-5, and Jasper’s 5-6. Center puts their three-game win streak on the line tonight. Diboll plays at Central tonight, and Jasper finishes the season at one-win Huntington.

 

Joaquin (10-4) has clinched the third and final playoff spot.

Douglass is the district champ, and Cushing is second.

 

In 23-1A, the San Augustine Wolves go to district co-leader and state-ranked Colmesneil.

 

Shelbyville and Timpson softball teams will enter the state playoffs this week.

 

The Lady Dragons will play Carlisle at 6 Thursday at Nacogdoches High School in a one-game bi-district playoff; while the Lady Bears take on Cushing in a best of 3-game bi-district series starting Thursday. Game 1 will be at 6 p.m. at Central Heights’ field. The second game will be played at 3:30 Friday at Nacogdoches High School field, and if needed, Game 3 would be played at the SFA Field at 4:30 Monday.

 

The Dist. 19-2A champion Garrison Lady Bulldogs will play Hemphill in a first-round best of 3 series starting Thursday night in Central. Game 1 is at 6 o’clock, with Game 2 at 7 Friday.

 

Garrison has a warm up game against Huntington at 6 p.m. tonight in Huntington.

 

The 36th annual Center Broadcasting-Shelby County Bass Angler’s Take a Kid Fishing Tournament, is coming up, Saturday, May 10 at Huxley Bay Marina on Toledo Bend. Sign-ups are underway for the free event, which is for kids 3 to 15. Entry forms are available at Center Broadcasting, Huxley Bay Marina, Scarber’s Grocery, and Trail’s End & RV in Huxley, First Bank and Trust East Texas in San Augustine, or Hometown Tackle in Center.
