Local Sports Round up 4/17/14; Horton Hurls No-Hitter, Ks 20

 

We wanted to add a few superlatives to the Center Roughrider's 2-0 win Tuesday night over Huntington. Rider pitcher Dalton Horton had an outing to remember, as the junior south-paw pitched a no-hitter, striking out 20 batters. In addition, Josh Burns went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and run scored. Taylor Tomlin got a RBI as he knocked Burns in with a triple. The 4-5 Riders will be in Jasper Friday night, still fighting for a playoff spot.

 

Other Dist. 20-3A scores Tuesday, it was first-place Carthage over Hudson, 4-3, as Carthage's lead is now 2 games over Hudson; third-place Diboll beats Jasper, 10-0, improving Diboll to 5-4, and giving Jasper a 5-5 mark, a half-game up on Center. The top 4 teams advance to the state playoffs.

 

Due to tomorrow being Good Friday, most athletic events are being held today.

 

District 21-1A's playoff picture has been settled with two games remaining. Douglass is 14-0; Cushing is 10-3; and Joaquin is 10-4. Timpson is 2 games back of the Rams in fourth. The top three teams advance.

 

In District 21-1A baseball today: Shelbyville will be at Chireno, Martinsville at Timpson, Tenaha at Cushing, and Joaquin has a bye.

 

Colmesneil, West Sabine & Broaddus are leading Dist. 23-1A, and look to be the playoff representatives.

In Dist. 23-1A, Brookeland will be at San Augustine tonight.

 

In Dist. 19-2A, Central Heights and Garrison will be in post-season, as Central Heights is atop the standings at 10-1, Garrison is 8-2, and Groveton in third at 6-4. Garrison goes to Woden tonight.

 

Softball:

 

The Center Lady Riders will finish their season at Jasper Friday.

 

Dist. 21-1A has wrapped up the schedule, with two local teams headed to the state playoffs. The Shelbyville Lady Dragons are the second-place representative and will play Carlisle at 6 p.m. next Thursday, April 24 at Nacogdoches High School. The Timpson Lady Bears are the third place team and will play Cushing next Thursday in bi-district action. The particulars are being finalized for that game.

 

The Garrison Lady Bulldogs will see if they can finish a perfect run through district when they go to Woden tonight.

 

The 36th annual Center Broadcasting-Shelby County Bass Angler’s Take A Kid Fishing Tournament, will be held, Saturday, May 10 at Huxley Bay Marina on Toledo Bend. Sign-ups are underway for the free event, which is for kids 3 to 15. Entry forms are available at Center Broadcasting, Huxley Bay Marina, Scarber’s Grocery, and Trail’s End & RV in Huxley, First Bank and Trust East Texas in San Augustine, or Hometown Tackle in Center. Also, you can print out an entry form from our Center Broadcasting Co. Website—cbc-radio.com and return to one of the entry locations by May 3.
