Local Sports Roundup; Rider Tennis Advances Several to Region Semis

In Bryan yesterday, the Center Roughrider Tennis Team had weather delays in the first day of the region tournament. Despite that, Alec Lucas and Adam Reeves advanced to semi-finals in boys’ doubles and will play Taylor today. Meanwhile, Whitlee Reed advanced in girls’ singles to the semi-finals and will take on Caldwell next. Matches will continue today. Thanks to James Greer for the update.

 

Joaquin will be sending a good representation to the Class A Regional Tennis Tournament at SFA tomorrow & Thursday. Last week, the Joaquin boys took the overall District Tennis Championship.

 

The Joaquin golf team is competing at the regional tournament. The first round was played yesterday, as the linksters are hoping to qualify for state. The Joaquin girls’ team took first at district, and the boys’ placed second.

 

In high school baseball tonight:

The Center Roughriders get back to Dist. 20-3A action at home against Huntington. The Riders are 3-5, Huntington is 1-8. By the way, the Riders will play Jasper this Friday, not Thursday.

 

In Dist. 21-1A, Shelbyville goes to Timpson, Tenaha at Chireno for a double-header starting at 4, and the top-two teams in the district, Cushing plays at Douglass. Joaquin is in third place in the district at 9-4, and has a bye today. The Dragons are 4-7, Timpson is 7-6, while Tenaha is 2-10.

 

In Dist. 23-1A, Broaddus will be at San Augustine. The Wolves are 3-7, while Broaddus is 7-2 in third place.

In Dist. 19-2A, Palestine Westwood is in Garrison to play the second-place 8-2 Bulldogs.

Softball:

 

The Center Lady Riders have their final home game tonight against Huntington. It’s also Senior Night. The Lady Riders finish out the season at Jasper on Friday.

 

In District 21-1A it's the final district game of the season, as Martinsville goes to Shelbyville, Timpson at Chireno; and Beckville at Joaquin. Timpson is 7-4 and Shelbyville is 8-3, both playoff bound.

 

The Shelbyville Lady Dragons will play Carlisle in a first-round bi-district game, Thursday, April 24 at Nacogdoches High School. Timpson will also have a bi-district game next week against Cushing. The particulars of that match-up are not available.

 

In Dist. 19-2A, the Garrison Lady Bulldogs have their final home game against Palestine Westwood.

 

Area track and field meets are being held Wednesday. Center qualifiers will be in Carthage, and Timpson, Joaquin, Shelbyville, Tenaha and San Augustine qualifiers are in Shelbyville for the Class 1-A Area Meet. Field events get underway tomorrow at 2, with running events at 6 at Dragon Stadium.

 

We're less than a month away from the 36th annual Center Broadcasting-Shelby County Bass Angler’s Take A Kid Fishing Tournament, to be held, Saturday, May 10 at Huxley Bay Marina on Toledo Bend. Sign-ups are underway for the free event, which is for kids 3 to 15. Entry forms are available at Center Broadcasting, Huxley Bay Marina, Scarber’s Grocery, and Trail’s End & RV in Huxley, First Bank and Trust East Texas in San Augustine, or Hometown Tackle in Center.
