San Augustine Drug to Celebrate 110th Anniversary Saturday

The home of the world famous Grapefruit HiBall will be celebrating its 110th anniversary on Saturday, and everyone's invited. San Augustine Drug & Gift in historic downtown, has a great event planned to observe the occasion from 10 to 2, featuring free food, vendor samples, numerous raffles, activities for the kids, and more.

Opened in 1904 by brothers, Alonzo & Ace Rushing, they sold the business to Casey Jones, who invented the signature drink "HiBall". Therman Bridges came on in August of 1965, beginning the tradition of tossing bubble gum to the kiddos, which continues today by Bridges' daughter, Debbie and her husband Mike Jackson, who took over the drug store in 1990.

Mike Ross is San Augustine Drug's gift manager, says there's no secret to what's kept the business going for 110 years--great customer service.

Through a tragic fire in the summer of 1988, Therman Bridges says the store never closed, re-opening two days later in another building as the original store was being rebuilt.

Be sure and check out the old fashioned soda fountain, ice cream, malt or milkshake and of course the famous Grapefruit HiBall. By the way, during Saturday's anniversary event, Ross says your first HiBall is on the house, and they'll have "say-so" ice cream cones for 5-cents, like back in the day.

Center Broadcasting salutes San Augustine Drug & Gift on its 110th anniversary, being celebrated from 10 to 2 Saturday, with everyone invited!
