DeSoto Parish Voters Go To Polls Saturday, Animal Shelter Funding on Table

DeSoto Parish voters will head to the polls tomorrow to vote on several items, one being an increase on the parish’s property tax milage rate, which is meant to fund the parish’s animal shelter and adoptions, as well as mosquito control. Right now, it costs around $500,000 a year to operate the shelter. If the milage is passed, that budget will increase to $900,000. Brown says that's to allow services to reach incorporated and unincorporated areas of the parish. It’s reported some of the parish's police jury think citizens would be better without the services. Parish administrator Steven Brown says money saving changes could be implemented if the tax milage isn’t passed, such as shutting down the shelter. The animal shelter is requesting a 1.5 milage rate increase. Last year, the DeSoto Parish shelter took in around 1,700 and adopted out around 120.
