Shelby County Relay For Life Set for Saturday at Expo Center

The 9th annual Shelby County Relay for Life will be held from 10 to 10 Saturday at the Shelby County Expo Center. This marks the first time the event is held on Saturday, instead of a Friday night start. Relay chairperson is Stacey Scarborough, she says awareness & participation prompted the change.

Ms. Scarborough says local businesses, schools and civic organizations make up the 17 teams, with almost 300 participants. She adds the change in days had brought out more participants, and relay teams are creative when it comes to fundraisers. She notes you don't have to be on a team to participate, just showing up to support those that are is appreciated.

Last year's Relay for Life raised over $127-thousand dollars for the American Cancer Society. Ms. Scarborough says teams are well on their way to reaching and hopefully beating that amount this year. A couple of the special moments during the relay will be the Cancer Survivor's lap at 7 Saturday evening, and the always touching Luminaria Ceremony at 9. The Shelby County Relay for Life will be from 10 to 10 Saturday at the Shelby County Expo Center.

Shelby County Judge Rick Campbell will be designating Saturday as "Cancer Survivor's Day" in Shelby County when he signs a proclamation at 9:30 this morning, with the Shelby County Relay for Life Committee on hand.
