Center: Loop 500 Extension Slowed by Weather, Utility Relocation

TxDOT is saying weather and utility relocation delays have slowed progress on the Loop 500 extension project in Center.

According to TxDOT’s Kathi White, the contractor tasked with building the northeast section of Loop 500 is currently focused on constructing the new Timber Rock Railroad Bridge and drainage work throughout the project site. TxDOT says it is working with the contractor on ways to move the project forward despite the unforeseen delays.

he Loop 500 project is designed to improve safety and mobility within the City of Center and provide relief around the courthouse square for thru traffic. Work began in November 2012 on the almost $12-million project, which is expected to be completed in late summer 2015.

The project runs from U.S. Hwy. 96 north to SH 7 east and includes constructing a two-lane highway with paved shoulders, with at-grade crossings at intersections and a grade separation at the Timber Rock Railroad.

This section of Loop 500 required approximately 98 acres of right-of-way which was funded by TxDOT and Shelby County. Construction was funded jointly by the City of Center, the Texas Transportation Commission, and the Texas Department of Transportation Lufkin District.
