Severe Storms Strike Area, Straight-Line Winds Up to 75 mph

Residents hit with high winds during Friday evening’s severe thunderstorms spent their weekend sawing and picking up trees, limbs and structural damage as Mother Nature unleashed her furry on the East Texas and Western Louisiana area for the second straight day. Following last Thursday evening’s storms, Friday’s activity was more widespread with greater intensity, as straight-line winds in excess of 60 to 75 mph in some locations, hail and heavy rains pummeled the pineywoods region for about two hours. Shelby, San Augustine and Nacogdoches Counties were all hit with numerous reports of downed trees on roadways, powerlines and structural damage. Emergency responders, TxDOT, Deep East Texas Electric Cooperative crews, and local citizens worked through the evening into the early hours Saturday to clear the aftermath. In Shelby County, the heaviest storm damage was in the southern portions of the county, especially from south of Shelbyville to the Huxley area, where high winds whipped apart a number of barns, tore roofing from houses, laid trees over on several residence and automobiles, and left a path of destruction. Northern San Augustine, northern Sabine and Nacogdoches County’s reported similar damage. Although a lot of the storm damage appeared to have been caused by a twister, the National Weather Service has not confirmed a tornado formed. Deep East Texas Electric Coop is reporting this morning service has been restored to all its customers, and report it’s the worst storm damage they’ve seen since Hurricane Rita in 2005.
