Local Sports Round up 3/28/14; Center Tennis Dominates District

The Center Roughrider Tennis Team again dominated the district tournament held Wednesday in Center, coming away with 12 of 16 regional qualifiers. The Regional Tournament is set for April 14 & 15 in Bryan.

 

Taking first in boys’ doubles was Alec Lucas & Adam Reeves; while second place went to Kamden Lucas and Jesus Ruiz. In girls’ doubles, first place was Jayton Cassell and Jasmine Crawley; and second was Elizabeth Chadwick and Iliana Rojas. Taking second in boys’ singles was Dillon Reynolds; and there will be a playoff today for second and third, both Center players between Julie Garcia and Whitley Reed. In mixed doubles, a playoff today for second and third between Chris Dunn/Sheriden Cassell, and Nathan Stuever/Mallory Nehring. Zach Faucett played in boys’ singles and did not place.

 

In JV play, also won by Center, boys’ first place doubles went to Jack Eddins and Chris Luna; girls’ doubles, first to Rylee Hudspeth and Brylee Hendrix and second to Zoey Stuever and Kimberly Rodriguez. In boys’ singles, first to Nate Morris, second, Tony Garcia, third to Johan Gonzalez and fourth to Tyler Ferguson. The girls’ singles were won by Center’s Allison Langford in first and Faith Lengl in second. Congratulations to these Roughrider Tennis Players and Regional Qualifiers.

 

The Center Roughriders play host to district leading Carthage tonight, with JV starting at 4:30. The Bulldogs come in on a hot streak, having won 7 games in-a-row, and 11 of their last 12, while the Riders have lost 4 of their last 5 games.

 

Center is tied with Central for fifth at 1-3, while Carthage has a 4-0, a half game up on Hudson, who’s 4-1. Diboll’s in third at 3-1, and Jasper is 2-3. Huntington is 0-4.

 

In District 21-1A, the second round of play starts this weekend, with several teams playing two games in the next couple of days. The state’s No. 1 ranked team, Douglass leads the standings at 7-0, while Cushing in second at 5-1, and the Joaquin Rams are just a half-game back at 5-2. Timpson is in fourth at 5-3; Shelbyville & Martinsville are 2-5; and Tenaha is 0-6.

 

Today’s games: it’s Chireno at Joaquin, Tenaha at Douglass and Mt. Enterprise at Shelbyville.

 

Saturday’s action: Joaquin at Cushing, Shelbyville at Douglass, and Chireno at Timpson.

 

In District 23-1A Friday, Chester will be at San Augustine. As for the district race, state-ranked Colmesneil is 5-0; West Sabine and Zavalla are 4-1; Broaddus is 3-2; while Chester, San Augustine and Burkeville each have one win.

 

In District 19-2A, Garrison is tied for third at 3-2 with Groveton. State-ranked Central Heights is on top at 5-0, with Crockett at 4-1. Garrison will be at Elkhart today.

 

Softball today:

 

The Center Lady Riders are 0-6 and will host Carthage.

District 21-A begins the second round today, as Shelbyville is at No. 1 state-ranked Beckville, Gary at Timpson; and Joaquin has a bye.

 

The district standings have Beckville is 6-0; with Shelbyville at 5-2; Timpson’s 4-2; Joaquin at 4-3; and Martinsville is 0-8.

 

Also today, The Garrison Lady Bulldogs go to Elkhart. Garrison is 7-0.

 

 

The SFA Ladyjacks defeat the College of Charleston, 78-74 last night in the semi finals of the Women’s Basketball Invitational. SFA will play the University of Illinois-Chicago at 3 p.m. Saturday for the WBI Championship. It’s the most wins by the Lady jacks in the program’s post-season history.
