Fire Scene Turns Into Murder Investigation in San Augustine County

A fire last week at a San Augustine County residence where a man’s body was found inside the burned structure has now turned into a homicide investigation. Yesterday, the San Augustine County Sheriff’s Office issued a press release saying they’re working the case with assistance from the Texas Department of Public Safety and Texas State Fire Marshal’s Office. San Augustine County Chief Deputy Gary Cunningham says 62-year old Kavy Neil Sowell’s body was found in the burned remains of a mobile home on County Road 3200 late in the evening on March 17. Chief Cunningham said preliminary autopsy results say Sowell’s body had multiple gunshot wounds, which resulted in his death, and did not say if the gun shots were fired by the suspect, or if they were from ammunition in the house. It’s reported Kavy Neil Sowell was a gun collector, and according to a neighbor, may have possibly had a land dispute with another individual, but Chief Cunningham would not speculate. Firefighters from San Augustine, Broaddus, and Powell Town responded to the blaze, but they had difficulty battling the fire because of exploding ammunition inside the residence. If you have any information that can assist in the investigation, you’re asked to contact Lufkin Crime Stoppers at 936-639-TIPS. Chief Cunningham said since San Augustine does not have a crime stoppers, Lufkin has offered to assist with theirs. He added there’s no connection between the incident and Lufkin. All calls and tips are anonymous and Crime Stoppers may pay a cash reward for information that leads to an arrest related to this crime.
