Local Sports Round up 3/24/14; Center's Stanley Medals at State

Center Roughrider power lifter Garrett Stanley has taken the silver medal after placing second in his weight division at the Texas High School Power Lifting State Meet held over the weekend in Abilene. Stanley had a total weight of 1,415 pounds, just 20 pounds behind first place. Actually, he was the best in the squat and dead lift. In addition, team mate Devincent Hoyt just missed medaling, with a fourth-place finish in the 220 pound class; Kiounis Williams was fifth in the 198 pound division; and Rider Zach Verhalen was 10th in the 275 pound division.

 

Shelbyville Dragon Kal Metcalf placed 7th in the 242 pound class. Congratulations to these local student-athletes.

 

The Center Roughrider soccer team has clinched a playoff spot and will enter the state playoffs tomorrow afternoon as they take on Bryan Rudder in a 5 p.m. start at Crockett High School.

 

Baseball Friday:

 

The Center Roughriders were clicking Friday night, taking a 14-1 mercy-rule win over Huntington in five innings. The victory is the first in District 20-3A for the Riders who improve to 1-2. Center will be home Tuesday night to play 1-3 Jasper.

 

Other 20-3A action Friday, it was Carthage over Hudson, 11-6; and Diboll beat Jasper, 8-2. Carthage & Diboll are on top of the standings at 3-0, while Hudson drops to 3-1.

 

In Dist. 21-1A:

 

On Friday, the Timpson Bears get a no-hitter from Hunter Smith to shut-out the Shelbyville Dragons, 4-0; and take a 16-10 decision over Martinsville on Saturday. The wins give Timpson a 5-2 record. Shelbyville played Chireno Saturday and came away with a 12-2 win. The Dragons are 3-3.

 

The Joaquin Rams take a 5-4 win over Martinsville Friday, improving Joaquin’s record to 4-2.

 

Tenaha’s game Friday with Chireno was postponed and rescheduled as part of a double-header on April 15. Saturday, the Tigers lost to Cushing, 5-4, to drop Tenaha to an 0-5 district record.

 

In Friday’s highly anticipated match up between state-ranked teams from 21-1A, it was all Douglass, as the No. 1 ranked Indians shut-out Cushing 7-0. Douglass beat Mt Enterprise Saturday, 15-0, to go to 7-0 atop the district standings. Douglass has allowed 3 runs in those seven wins.

 

In Dist. 23-1A, the San Augustine Wolves notch their first district win Friday, 20-14 over Brookeland. S.A. is now 1-3. Colmesneil defeats Broaddus, 13-3, and West Sabine shuts-out Burkeville, 11-0.

 

Dist. 19-2A: The Garrison Bulldogs take an 11-1 win over Palestine Westwood, giving Garrison a 2-2 record. Central Heights beats Groveton, 5-4. Central Heights is 5-0.

 

Softball Friday:

 

The Center Lady Riders can’t seem to find their offense as they fall to Huntington, 10-0, and drop to 0-5 in Dist. 20-3A.

 

In Dist. 21-1A, it’s a three-way tie for second, between Timpson, Joaquin and Shelbyville. The Timpson Lady Bears get a 7-0 shut-out win over Chireno, the Joaquin Lady Rams take a tough 10-0 loss to the state’s No. 1 ranked team, Beckville, and the Shelbyville Lady Dragons get a 12-2 win over Martinville. Beckville leads the district at 6-0.

 

In Dist. 19-2A, the Garrison Lady Bulldogs are 6-0 after a 16-0 shutout of Palestine Westwood.

 

A history making season came to an end for the SFA Lumberjacks last night in San Diego, as UCLA beat SFA, 77-60 in the Round of 32. The Lumberjacks advanced with their first-ever NCAA Tournament win Friday night, a thrilling 77-75 decision over Virginia Commonwealth.

 

The SFA Ladyjacks are headed to the Women’s Basketball Invitational Final Four after beating Boise State, 80-59 Saturday. SFA travels to play College of Charleston.

 

On tap today: the Center Boys’ Golf team is at the Grapeland Tournament being played at the Crockett Country Club. The Lady Rider golf team will be in Crockett Tuesday. This is the final tune-up tournament for Center golfers as district will be held next week.

 

The District 20-3A middle school track and field meets are being held today. The girls’ meet is at Diboll, with the boys’ in Center starting at 3:45 at Roughrider Stadium.

 

In Timpson today, there’s a Jr. High meet taking place after school.

 

Finally, The Rayovac FLW Series bass tournament was held over the weekend on Toledo Bend out of Cypress Bend Park, and Russell Cecil of Willis won the three-day event with a 15 fish total of 61.09 pounds, winning $33,000 in prize money and a new Ranger rig. Todd Castledine of Nacogdoches was third, Lendell Martin, Jr. of Nacogdoches was 8th, and Phillip Crelia of Center was 11th.
This Thursday thru Sunday on Sam Rayburn, it’s the FLW’s Texas Tussel, with take-off from Cassels-Boykin County Park at Zavalla.
