Local Sports Round up 3/20/14

 

Local track and field teams are taking part in meets today:

 

The Center Roughriders and Lady Riders will be at Waskom; Shelbyville, San Augustine and Tenaha head to West Sabine; and Timpson and Garrison are at Cushing.

 

Baseball Friday:

 

The Center Roughriders will be out to stop a 4-game skid as they return to action tomorrow night in Huntington. The Riders are 0-2 in Dist. 20-3A.

 

Dist. 21-1A Baseball Friday: Shelbyville at Timpson; Martinsville at Joaquin;Tenaha at Chireno; #12 Cushing tangles with top-ranked Douglass in Cushing. 

 

In Dist. 23-1A, San Augustine at Brookeland; and Garrison at Palestine Westwood.

 

The Texas Girls Association Softball Poll is out for the week and the No. 1 Class A team is Beckville; Natalia is No. 1 in Class 2A; the top 3A team is LaGrange, with Carthage No. 4 and Hudson No. 10; in 4A, Richmond Foster is tops; and the No. 1 team in 5A is Atascosita.

 

Softball Friday:

The Center Lady Riders have opened Dist. 20-3A with three-straight loses and will be in Huntington Friday night trying to turn things around.

 

Other games, Chireno at Timpson; Joaquin at district-leading and No. 1 state-ranked Beckville; Shelbyville at Martinsville; and 4-0 Garrison at Palestine Westwood.

 

 

The Texas High School Power Lifting state meet will be held Saturday in Abilene, and six local lifters are taking part. After winning region, four Center Roughriders will be participating at state, including Kiounis Williams, Garrett Stanley, DeVincent Hoyt and Zach Verhalen; while Shelbyville’s Kal Metcalf will also be there. In addition, Adam Mason of Joaquin will be a state alternate.

 

The SFA Lumberjacks will take on Virginia Commonwealth at 6:30 Friday in San Diego in the first round of the NCAA men's basketball tournament. This marks only the second time in the program's history that SFA has played in the NCAA tourney, and they're No. 12 seed in the South Region. If the ‘Jacks win Friday night, they will face the winner of the UCLA and Tulsa game in the second round of the tournament.

 

Meanwhile, the SFA Ladyjacks will host Texas State at 7 p.m. tonight at William R. Johnson Coliseum as part of the Women’s Basketball Invitational. The winner advances to play the Boise State-Grand Canyon winner.
