History Made: Harbison Comes Away With Recount Victory

History has been made in Shelby County. Following last night’s manual recount of the ballots cast in the March 4 Republican Party Primary, for the first time, there will be a female county judge come January.

After all ballots were inspected and counted, challenger Allison Harbison again took the most votes, this time by a three-vote margin, 1,633 to 1,630 for County Judge Rick Campbell. The hand counting turned up three more votes for Ms. Harbison than what she had on March 10 when the provisional ballots were figured in, while Judge Campbell was able to pick up one vote from a week ago.

The manual recount was requested by Campbell following the one-vote loss, and the task of recounting the over 3,000 ballots took some five hours.

Republican Party Chairperson Leigh Porterfield had this comment last night. “We are blessed to live in a place with excellent candidates and so many folks willing to serve their fellow citizens by working in various capacities to conduct every phase of our elections. We owe them our sincere gratitude”.
