Recount Today: Shelby County Judge's Race Comes Down to Hand Tally

There will likely be closure in the Shelby County's Judge's Republican Party Primary by the end of today, as a manual recount of ballots in the race will take place at 5:30 this afternoon at the Shelby County Courthouse. After almost two weeks of going through a one-vote difference, challenger Allison Harbison and incumbent County Judge Rick Campbell, as well as the citizens of Shelby County will know officially who'll be the candidate elect for the position.

County Republican Party Chairperson Leigh Porterfield says tonight's manual recount will use a Texas Election Code-prescribed tally system, which uses two teams consisting of four people each. On each team, two people will view a ballot with one calling out the name which is bubbled in on that ballot. They will alternate calling out the names on subsequent ballots to avoid fatigue and mis-statement. The other two people on the team will each have a tally form and make a hash mark for the candidate whose name is called. Ms. Porterfield added that process will be repeated for each ballot cast in the primary election, and the ballots are counted one precinct at a time. She said having two teams working simultaneously should cut the time required for completion.

However, she adds it will be a lengthy process with over 3,000 ballots to read and tally. Ms. Porterfield told Center Broadcasting it could be anywhere from two to four hours to complete the recount process.

Ms. Harbison took the most votes in the primary election last week by one vote, and held that one-vote margin when last Monday's two provisional ballots were figured in.

Today's recount has been requested by Judge Campbell.
