It came as little surprise yesterday when County Judge Rick Campbell made a formal request to Shelby County Republican Party Chairperson Leigh Porterfield that he wanted a recount of the ballots in the March 4 Party Primary Election. After a one-vote defeat to Allison Harbison, and Campbell saying he was going to ask for a recount—it came down to just when he would make a formal request.
Ms. Porterfield said a manual recount of the ballots concerning the Shelby County Judge’s race will take place at 5:30 Monday afternoon at the courthouse. She said a Texas Election Code-prescribed tally system will be used, and it’ll be a lengthy process since there are over 3,000 ballots to count.
Ms. Porterfield had notified before lunch yesterday in case there was a recount, it would be done two working days after today’s canvassing, which is Monday. She said after checking with the election code, anytime there are two or fewer candidates in a race, the deadline is 5 p.m. of the second business day after the canvass.
The recount is not open to the public.
