Shelby & San Augustine County Unemployment Down

The Texas unemployment rate for January was the lowest since November of 2008, according to information released last Friday by the Texas Workforce Commission. The state’s rate fell to 5.7 percent, down from 6 percent in December 2013. Texas also remained below the nation’s January unemployment rate of 6.6 percent. In Shelby County, the January rate is 6.4 percent, down slightly from December, and a full percentage from a year ago. San Augustine County’s rate was 9.4, almost two percentage points lower than Jan. 2013. In neighboring counties, Sabine County was down somewhat to 13 percent, still one of the highest in the state, but better than a year ago when they it was 15 percent. Nacogdoches County’s unemployment is 5.6 percent, and Panola County is 4.4 percent.
