Local Sports Round up 3/7/14

Ten Center High School Power lifters competed yesterday in the Texas High School Boys Regional Power lifting Meet in Rusk. These athletes competed in 5 different power lifting meets to qualify for a position at region. The regional qualifiers include: Hairo Salazar, a sophomore, and ranked at #10, Daniel Rodriguez, Sophomore, came in at #8, Joe King, Freshmen, at #4, and Jamie Hubbard, sophomore who made the cut coming in at #10. Senior Garrett Stanley had an amazing year in power lifting, and qualified in the #1 spot with a whopping 1440 pounds. Kiounis Williams is also a Senior, and was the #1 qualifier in his weight class with a best lifting total of 1460 pounds. Another Senior, and veteran qualifier is Jose Vallejo, who qualified at #6 . Junior Devincent Hoyt came in at #3 in his weight class, Another Junior Esteban Garza sealed a spot at #9, and Junior Zach Verhalen who was ranked #3 going into regional. Other lifters from Center that came in just short of qualifications are JaCarlos Hall, Cole Hudspeth, Adrian Johnson, and Pedro Mendoza. Results of yesterday’s meet are not known at this time.

 

The Center Roughrider baseball teams opened play Thursday in the Hallsville Builders Tournament, and were handed a 4-1 loss by Pleasant Grove. This is the same team the Riders had defeated 2-1 last week in Kilgore. Center has two games today in Hallsville, at 10 this morning and 12:30 this afternoon. The Riders also have a game at the Hallsville tournament at 10 Saturday morning.

 

Also today: the San Augustine Wolves go to Beckville in non-district action; the Garrison Bulldogs are playing in the Kirbyville Tournament today.

 

In a district baseball game today, the Joaquin Rams host Mt Enterprise. The Timpson Bears and Shelbyville Dragons have byes.

 

On Wednesday, #1 state-ranked Douglass shut-out the Shelbyville Dragons, 18-0, in district play.

 

In Softball:

The Lady Riders have their second district game today at home against Central; the Timpson Lady Bears go to Beckville; Gary at the Joaquin Lady Rams; the Chireno Lady Owls at the Shelbyville Lady Dragons and the Garrison Lady Bulldogs at Central Heights.

 

In track & field: The Timpson Bears have taken their second varsity team championship in as many weeks as they won the Beckville meet yesterday.

 

Over in Nacogdoches last night, the SFA Lumberjacks defeat Oral Roberts, 83-72 to run their winning streak to 25 games, and improve to 17-0 in Southland Conference play. SFA closes out conference at 6 Saturday night at home with Central Arkansas.

 

Also, don’t have all the particulars, but the Joaquin Ram Tennis Team came away with a number of first and second place finishes at the Nacogdoches tennis tournament on Thursday.

 

Today at the UIL Boys' State Basketball Tournament in Austin, semi-final action has the 2A semis, with Aransas Pass vs. Ponder and Tatum taking on Bushland; the 1A, Div. II semis, Water Valley vs. Nazareth and Laneville vs. Cumby Miller Grove; and the 5A semis, Galena Park North Shore vs. DeSoto and Converse Judson against Allen.

 

Yesterday's 1A, Div. 1 semi: Muenster over Grapeland, 65-64.

 

Todd Castledine of Nacogdoches, Texas, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 29 pounds, 6 ounces Saturday to win the second Walmart Bass Fishing League Cowboy Division tournament of the season on Sam Rayburn Reservoir. For his victory, Castledine earned $55-hundred. Castledine said he caught most of his weight on a 6th Sense Crush 500DD crankbait and a Carolina rigged prototype 7-inch Kicker Fish Bubble Fry.
