Salvinia Continues to Plague Toledo Bend

There's a vegetative problem on Toledo Bend and the Toledo Bend Bi-State Alliance recently met to discuss management of giant Salvinia that's covering over 6,000 acres of the border reservoir.

Texas Parks and Wildlife has several means to control the spread of the invasive plant on the lake, the first and most popular is spraying of herbicides. Lake residents are warned to be cautious before going this route and contact Texas Parks and Wildlife before doing the spraying on their own.

Residents were advised they should be proactive to help control the spread of Salvinia. Continue to clean off boats when leaving the water, and be sure no Salvinia is left on the boat or trailer when you leave the water. It's illegal to drive down the road with Salvinia on a trailer.

Those looking for tips on controlling or combating giant Salvinia, should contact Thomas Decker, Aquatic Invasive Species Biologist with Texas Parks & Wildlife at 409-698-9121, ext. 240.
