Rally, Protest Desends on Hemphill Saturday

Hemphill was the site of a peaceful protest Saturday afternoon, as friends and family of Alfred Wright took to the streets in front of the Sabine County courthouse. The 28-year old Jasper man went missing last November before family members found his body in Sabine County. The official autopsy ruled his death accidental after a combination of drugs were found in his system. Wright’s family believes the Sabine County Sheriff’s Office is covering up a murder.

A rally and group discussion was held prior to Saturday’s march at a Jasper church where Wright’s father addressed the crowd, and business leaders, legal expert and private investigator took part. Also during the rally, two family members of James Byrd, Jr., the Jasper man dragged to his death in 1998 spoke to the Wright family.

Wright’s younger brother Savion, a recent contestant on “American Idol” performed a song dedicated to his brother.

Members of the New Black Panther Party were also a part of the protest and rally. DPS Troopers and Federal Agents were on hand to make sure the rally/protest stayed peaceful.
