Checking the girls’ area round playoff action from over the weekend.

 

The Shelbyville Lady Dragons and the Tenaha Lady Tigers are both headed to the Region III Class 1A, Div. I region quarterfinals, after Shelbyville defeats West Sabine, 34-32, and Tenaha gets past Dallardsville Big Sandy, 54-52. Yes, it’s an all Shelby County match up in the third-round of the state playoffs between two District 22-1A, Div. 1 rivals. That game is set for 6:30 Tuesday night at Panola College in Carthage. It’s been over 20 years since the Lady Dragons have made it this deep into the post-season, and 14 years for the Lady Tigers. Shelbyville sweep Tenaha in district. Tuesday night’s winner moves on to the region tournament in Tyler.

 

The San Augustine Lady Wolves were defeated by Cushing, 45-34 in Lufkin Friday. Cushing will meet Wells in the region quarterfinal round.

 

The Garrison Lady Bulldogs are headed to the Class 2A regional quarterfinals with a 50-46 win Saturday night over Jefferson in Carthage. The win sets up a District 19-2A rematch with undefeated, state-ranked and Central Heights. The Lady Blue Devils beat West Rusk, 64-48 to advance.

 

The Chireno girls beat Jonesboro, 72-43 in a Div. II area-round contest, and will move on to play the Calvert.

 

In Friday night’s boys’ District 20-3A playoff, Jasper comes away with a 58-53 win, and will be the second-place team in the playoff seeding. The Riders are third, and Center will play Fairfield at 8 Tuesday night in Rusk for bi-district. Diboll is the fourth seed and plays Mexia, and Jasper plays Palestine, while Central, the district champ, takes on Rusk.

 

In another district playoff game Friday, the San Augustine Wolves are riding some momentum as they win the playoff for the top seeding in 23-1A, Div. 1, 72-59 over West Sabine in Lufkin Friday. San Augustine has a first-round bye, while West Sabine plays Colmesneil in bi-district. In the fight for the third place seed, Brookeland knocks Broaddus from the playoffs.

 

In other boys’ state basketball playoff games this week, the Shelbyville Dragons meet New Summerfield at 7:30 Tuesday night in Tatum, while the Martinsville Pirates play Mt Enterprise at 6:30 Tuesday in Tenaha. San Augustine gets the winner of Martinsville/Mt. Enterprise in the area round later this week.

 

As for the Tenaha Tigers, they have a first-round bye, and will meet the winner of West Sabine/Colmesneil in the area round later this week. At the East Texas Playoff Preview in Tyler Saturday, Tenaha lost to Class 2A Crockett, 74-71 in overtime.

 

The Central Heights Blue Devils will play Warren at 8 tonight at Angelina College in a Class 2A bi-district game.

 

Girls’ softball scheduled today: the Center Lady Riders go to Nacogdoches for a 5:30 start.

 

The high school baseball regular season gets underway today, the Center Riders host Queen City at 5:30; the Tenaha Tigers go to Elysian Fields in a 6 p.m. first pitch; and Woodville will be at Garrison. The Shelbyville Dragons have an intra squad game.

 

Soccer today: Tenaha Tigers at Tatum

 

Soccer Tuesday, the Riders and Lady Riders will be in Palestine for district games. The Tenaha Lady Tigers are in Marshall.
