Local Sports Roundup 2/7/14

 

Add another name to the National Signing Day list, Center Roughrider Kiounis Williams has committed to play football this fall at East Texas Baptist University in Marshall. Williams is a multiple sport athlete, having played linebacker for the Riders.

 

There’s two games left in the boys’ high school district basketball schedule, and there’s a number of key match-ups tonight.

 

The Center Roughriders are a game back of the Dist. 20-3A leaders at 7-3 as they’ll be at 0-10 Carthage. Central and Diboll are on top at 8-2, with Diboll at Central tonight. Huntington is 1-9 and goes to 7-4 Jasper. The top four teams advance to post-season.

 

In District 22-1A, Div. 1, Tenaha has won the district championship, and will carry their 8-0 record into tonight’s game at home against 3-5 Gary. Timpson is 1-7 and goes to 5-3 Shelbyville, and 5-3 Martinsville heads to 2-6 Joaquin. The top three teams are headed to the playoffs.

 

In District 23-1A, Div. 1, looks like the top-3 teams are just about set, as West Sabine is 8-0, followed by San Augustine at 7-1 and Broaddus at 5-3, two games ahead of Brookeland. Tonight in Pineland, West Sabine and S.A. meet. The Tigers got away with a win in San Augustine last month. Broaddus heads to Brookeland and Zavalla at Pineywoods.

 

In the girls’ high school basketball playoffs, the Tenaha Lady Tigers will take on Neches in Rusk at 6:30 pm. Monday night in a Class A, Div. 1 bi-district game. Tenaha fans who wish to attend Monday night’s game can do so on a Tiger Charter bus.  Price of the ride is only $4 and seats can be reserved in the high school office.  The $4 reservation is for the bus ride only.  Tickets will be at the expense of the patron upon arrival. Only 9th grade students and above can ride without being accompanied by a parent. 

 

Also, the San Augustine Lady Wolves will be playing a first round game at 6:30 Monday against Evadale in Woodville.

 

The Shelbyville Lady Dragons have a first-round bye in the playoffs due to winning district, and won’t know their second round opponent  after tonight. They’re tentatively looking to play next Friday night, Feb. 14, possibly at Angelina College.

 

Softball scrimmage action scheduled today, the Center Lady Riders will travel to Garrison; Waskom at the Joaquin Lady Rams; and the Shelbyville Lady Dragons at Central Heights.

 

Baseball scrimmage today, Garrison at Alto; Saturday, Center at Jacksonville

 

Soccer, the Tenaha boys and girls teams will host New Summerfield at 5:30 today. Friday night, the Center Rider and Lady Rider soccer teams will open district against Diboll. The Riders are home, and the Lady Riders will go to Diboll. Saturday, Tenaha Girls Soccer @ Texas High 12:00/2:30 pm.

 

We even have tennis, the Center Rider Varsity Tennis will be at Jacksonville (all day) Friday.

 

The Shelbyville ISD has released the Dragons’ varsity non-district football schedule for the upcoming season, which will kick-off on Aug. 29. Shelbyville will open with a road trip to Linden-Kildare, then have back-to-back home games against Garrison and Tenaha, followed by a trip to Colmesneil and finish out at home with Queen City. The District 10-2A, Div. II schedule will be finalized next Wednesday. Shelbyville will have district games against San Augustine, Joaquin, Beckville, Cushing and West Sabine.

 

Center Youth Baseball will have their final sign-up from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., today at the Center Middle School Cafeteria. Birth certificates are required for first-time players.

 

Center ASA Softball will not have a late registration date. However if you still want to sign up your girls please call Sean Crouch 590-2754 or David Lawrence 332-5332. Sunday, February 9th will be the last day to register.
