Local Sports Roundup 1/21/14

The Texas Association of Basketball Coaches are out with their weekly state rankings, and the San Augustine Wolves and Tenaha Tigers are both up a spot in the Class 1A, Div. 1 poll, sitting No. 8 & 9 respectively, and West Sabine is No. 20. In the girls’ Class 2A poll, Central Heights remains No. 4 with a 27-0 season record; and the Chireno Lady Owls are No. 11 in Class A, Div. II.

In District 20-3A, the district co-leading Center Roughriders are home to play Hudson as the second round of district play begins. Center’s 5-1, Hudson comes in 2-4. Other 20-3A games, Carthage goes to co-leader Jasper, and 4-2 Central at Huntington. 

 

District 22-1A, Div. 1 boys, has Tenaha at Gary, Joaquin at Martinsville and Shelbyville at Timpson. Tenaha and Gary are tied for the lead at 3-0, while Shelbyville is a game back at 2-1, and Martinsville’s 1-2.

 

In girls’ action, the district leading Shelbyville Lady Dragons are 5-0, and play Timpson.

 

In District 23-1A, Div. 1, tonight it’s West Sabine at San Augustine in a battle of state-ranked district leaders. The Wolves and Tigers are 3-0. Elsewhere, Brookeland goes to Broaddus and Pineywoods at Zavalla.

 

Soccer this evening, the Center Roughriders are home to play the Crockett JV; and the Lady Riders go to Jasper.

 

 

Four student/athletes at West Sabine High School in Pineland have been invited to participate in the Down Under Sports Tournaments hosted on the Gold Coast of Australia. They’re looking for sponsors to make donations towards the cost of competing. The young men are currently selling tickets for a 4 gallon-2 basket Cajun Fryer donated by Ted & Michelle Wristen at Haslam Trailers and Buildings in Joaquin. Tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20. Drawing is March 1. Several other events planned are a Bingo-Texas Hold’em Poker Tournament, and building and selling washer boards. They also need items for these events.
