San Augustine man arrested for abusing sex offender registration

A San Augustine man has been arrested for failing to comply with the rules associated with sex offender registration. 47-year old Darren Martin was taken into custody last Thursday and released on a personal recognizance bond Friday morning. San Augustine County Chief Deputy Gary Cunningham said his department had reason to believe Martin was driving to Shelby County to stay with his mother during the week and only coming back to San Augustine County on weekends. Cunningham said according to the sex offender registration guidelines, you can’t do that – you have to register where you spend the night each night. The San Augustine County Sheriff’s Office did a sex offender compliance check on Martin in early 2012, and he was found to not be in compliance. He was given a chance to correct the problem, but didn’t, according to Cunningham. The Texas Department of Public Safety’s online sex offender database states that Martin’s risk level is “moderate”. He was convicted of sexually assaulting a 16-year old girl in May of 2002 and sentenced to a 10-year prison term. He’s currently on parole.
