Center Broadcasting Community Spotlight of the Week

It’s now time for the Center Broadcasting Community Spotlight of the Week. This Week’s Community Spotlight will be shedding light on a man who organizes and cooks to help others out. We would like to highlight Mr. Bobby Daw. Bobby was born and raised in Center, however eventually moved away for work. After working for Southwestern Bell for thirty years, Bobby retired and headed back to Center. In the mid to late eighties, Bobby and some guys went down to Houston to compete in a BBQ cook-off hosted by the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. The prize was a scholarship being awarded to the county for a deserving student. After great success, the group of guys decided to form an official team. It was then the Shelby County Cookers was born. Every year since, the team has been heading to Houston to compete in the Poultry division of the cook-off. Approximately 400 teams are represented each year and the Shelby County Cookers always end up being one of the top 20 teams. The team that started with 10 or 12 people has grown to 33 and counting. Bobby has been instrumental in the functions of the group as well as the arranging of all the fundraisers, to which the cookers help groups raise funds for worthy causes within the community. When we interviewed Bobby, he humbly gave all the credit to the group. So to Honor Bobby Daw’s wish, we not only want to thank Bobby Daw but also the Shelby County Cookers for all of their hard work and tireless dedication to the people of Shelby County.
