No recount in the Shelby County Sheriff’s race

To follow up on a story we told you about recently, there will be no recount in the Shelby County Sheriff’s race. County Clerk Allison Harbison’s office confirmed Monday that Sheriff Newton Johnson did not pick-up the recount paperwork and return within the time allowed after canvassing of ballots. Mrs. Harbison said a candidate has two days after canvassing to file the paperwork and pay the $1,500 fee needed to call for a recount. Last Wednesday, Nov. 21 was the deadline date. Sheriff Johnson had verbally advised Mrs. Harbison a few days after the Nov. 6 General Election he wanted to call for the recount to challenger Willis Blackwell by 88 votes. All new and re-elected county officials will take office Jan. 1.
