Sales tax revenues varied across East Texas

Sales tax revenues are varied across East Texas in October, as some cities are seeing double-digit decreases, while others are seeing hefty increases based on figures represented by September sales. In Shelby County, the City of Center’s sales taxes revenues are down over 10.5%, with a net payment this period of $302-thousand. Year-to-date, they’re down 10 percent. However, in Timpson, there’s a 39% increase in payments to date, with the latest sales-tax check for $21, 704. The City of Huxley’s net payment is up over 55 percent, while Joaquin’s October check is down almost 28 percent, but is second only to Center, at $26,717.Tenaha is down almost 12 percent from the same period in 2011.

 

In San Augustine, the net payment to date was right at $37-thousand, which was down 27% from the same period last year, and the City of Broaddus saw a 25% decrease in the latest sales tax payment from the state. In Nacogdoches, their payment was down 6 percent for the period, as a check of almost $530-thousand is going to Nacogdoches. While in Garrison, they’re sales tax revenue saw a four-percent increase. Timpson Mayor Debra Smith said the increase in her city’s tax revenue relates back to doing business at home. “Shopping locally not only saves you the fuel and time expended when travelling to neighboring towns it puts money back into our local economy to operate and improve our water & sewer systems, our streets & sidewalks and our parks.”
