Commissioners’ Court canvassing ballots today

Shelby County Commissioners’ Court has a special called meeting at 9 this morning for the purpose of canvassing the ballots for the General Election held Nov. 6.  In a related matter, we told last week there was a possibility of Sheriff Newton Johnson requesting a recount of the ballots cast in the Nov. 6 General Election, as the incumbent was defeated by Willis Blackwell by 88 votes. Shelby County Clerk Allison Harbison confirmed last week that Sheriff Johnson had “verbally” said he would be following through with a recount. However, as of the close of business Friday, the recount paperwork had not been picked up by the sheriff. Ms. Harbison said an individual has two days after votes are canvassed to make their intentions officially known. That would be Wednesday.
