Sheriff Johnson wants a recount

It appears a recount may be held in the recent Shelby County Sheriff’s election. Even though an application has not been officially made, Shelby County Clerk Allison Harbison confirmed Tuesday, that Sheriff Newton Johnson has “verbally” said he would be petitioning for a recount of the results of last Tuesday’s General Election. Johnson was unofficially defeated by challenger Willis Blackwell by 88 votes, as almost 92-hundred registered voters cast their ballots. Ms. Harbison said a candidate has two days after votes are canvassed to ask for a recount. The Shelby County Commissioners’ Court is planning to canvass the election results Monday, Nov. 19. She added it’s also the petitioner’s prerogative to request electronic or hand counting be done. If that’s the case, Ms. Harbison said it could take 2 to 3 days to recount ballots by hand, or a day-and-a-half if done electronically. She also said it’s common for recounts to be asked for in high-profile elections when there’s less than 10 percent difference in votes. She reminded us Sheriff Johnson was involved in a recount when he was elected in 2004.
