According an audit publicly released earlier this week by the Louisiana Legislative Auditor’s office, DeSoto Parish Fire District No. 1 violated the state’s nepotism law by employing the fire chief’s son as a consultant.  The violation was remedied when Fire Chief Jack Canton’s son, Rusty Canton, was terminated when the issue was discovered last year. The Board of Commissioners is still waiting on additional input from the state Ethics Board.  Ruston Canton was paid $11,250 in 2011 and 2010. Louisiana state law prohibits a member of immediate family of a member of a governing authority or the chief executive from being employed.  DeSoto Parish Fire District No. 1, which serves the Logansport area, is also cited for violation of the open meetings law for failure to publish minutes of the board meetings in local newspaper.
