The Texas Workforce Commission has released August unemployment numbers, and those stats have shown improvement from July percentages. Shelby County's unemployment rate for August was 7.2 percent, down from 7.7 a month earlier. Meanwhile, in San Augustine County, the unemployment remained in double-digits at 10.7 percent, somewhat better than the 11.1 in July. Sabine County continues to have the highest unemployment rate in the 12-county Deep East Texas region. Sabine County's August rate is 15.1 percent. Other neighboring county August rates were: Nacogdoches at 6.7 percent; Angelina 7.0 percent; Jasper 10.1 percent; and Newton County 12.4 percent. Compared to a year ago, the unemployment picture in Deep East Texas has improved as a whole. As a whole, the Deep East Texas region has an unemployment rate of 8.3 percent, down from 8.9 in July. Statewide, unemployment is 7.0 percent.
