Deputy Answers Call to be a Donor

Sheriff Jayson Richardson would like to acknowledge one of our patrol officers for his recent actions that went beyond the call of duty, though the officer says that his actions are nothing more than what he signed up for.

In October of 2017, Deputy Chris Davis was presented with an opportunity to sign up for the "Be The Match" program at the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office Regional Training Academy.  Be The Match is a program for cancer patients in need to be matched with potential donors who are willing to participate in bone marrow transplants, blood stem cells, and other methods that can help save a life.  Most never receive a call, but Davis was recently notified that a patient was in need of Peripheral Blood Stem Cells to which he was a valid match for.  This process would consist of taking medication by injection for 5 days prior to the donation date, called Filgrastm, which causes the body to increase white blood cells and produce peripheral blood stem cells.  Davis would then have to be admitted into the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center in Houston, TX, where he would spend the day in a chair with an IV in each arm.  This may not seem like a task that anyone would willingly agree to, but with the blessing of Sheriff Richardson and the DeSoto Parish Sheriff's Office, Davis was quickly on the road to saving a life.

Deputy Chris Davis is back home, on patrol here in DeSoto Parish, and says that his actions were merely an opportunity that he'd gladly do all over again.   Be The Match is not a new program for the DeSoto Parish Sheriff's Office to participate in as they have held bone marrow drives with employee participation in the past.  Sheriff Richardson says "When Chris asked to take off from work to go do this, our answer was absolutely.  We are very proud of him for accepting the call and we encourage others in public service to consider the difference they can make in someone else's life."
