Joaquin Structure Fire

At approximately 3:30 p.m. Thursday, the Joaquin Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire at the old Buck’s Hitchin’ Rail building at the west end of the Highway 84 overpass. Desoto Fire District #1 responded immediately as well, per the automatic mutual aid agreement between the two departments. Firefighters battled thick smoke and intense heat in an effort to contain the fire and keep it from spreading to the Joaquin Tire and Road Service shop next door. Center Fire Department was dispatched to bring a tanker truck and extra manpower, and Timpson VFD sent extra help as well. Desoto Fire District #5 also responded to assist. The fire building was a total loss, but efforts to protect the adjoining building were successful. The Joaquin VFD wishes to thank all departments and firefighters who responded, as well as Precinct 3 Constable Roy Cheatwood, Texas DPS State Trooper Keith Jones, and Ricky Smith Towing who helped out with traffic control.
