11 Year Old Passes Away in Gun Related Accident

This Letter from Nacogdoches Sheriff Jason Bridges in it's entirety.

Terrible Tragedy: Accidental Shooting

An 11 year boy has died Wednesday afternoon after an accidental shooting. The shooting occurred at his home in the Martinsville area.

Law Enforcement and medical personnel were dispatched to the residence at 1:43 p.m. A DPS trooper was in the area on highway 7 east at the time, and arrived within minutes of the call. The trooper entered the residence and observed the mother of the child performing CPR. The trooper took over and gave CPR to the child until EMS arrived on scene. The child was transported to Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

Family members were at the residence when the shooting occurred. The 11 year old child, who was an avid hunter, and very familiar with guns had also taken a hunters education class.

The child went into the parent’s closet for some unknown reason and found a pistol. The gun somehow went off, striking the victim in the head.

The Nacogdoches County Sheriff Office is conducting an investigation into the shooting. An autopsy had been ordered.

Our thoughts and prayers are with this family at this time as they suffer through this terrible tragedy.

With respect to the family, and due to the victim is a juvenile, the victim’s identity will not be released by the Sheriff’s Office.
