Shelby County Fit - Walk Across Texas Worksite Wellness Program Off to a Great Start

Twenty-six teams and four solo walkers dusted off their walking shoes and joined in to “Walk Across Texas!” These teams and solo walkers are competing with each other to see who can walk the most miles over eight weeks from September 10 – November 4, 2016.   Their goal is to walk at least 900 miles (the distance from Center to El Paso).  At the conclusion of week 1 the teams/individuals have walked over 4,300 miles.  The top teams in lead are as follows:

1. Shelby County Steppers
2. The Walkie Talkies
3. Philippians 4:13

Participants kicked-off this wellness program by participating in a 5K Fun Run and Walk.  Over 75 determined adults and youth completed this challenge on September 10th.  In addition, participants in the program donated over 1,067 pounds of canned goods to the Shelby County Outreach Ministry Food Bank to help those in need.  The next 5K event will be held in conjunction with the Poultry Festival on Saturday, October 8th beginning at 7:30 a.m. in front of the historic courthouse in Center.  Come out and join our Walk Across Texas teams in this fun, free event.  Donations will be accepted to support breast cancer awareness.
Walk Across Texas, sponsored by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce is a fun, flexible, and FREE way to encourage people to exercise.  For more information on wellness programs, call Jheri-Lynn McSwain, CEA-FCS at Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service in Shelby County at 936-598-7744 or email at jlmcswain@ag.tamu.edu.
