Art, Sewing, Fashion and Food Fun 4-H Youth Projects to Kick-off

Is baking, competing in a Chopped food challenge, creating yummy holiday treats, and having fun in a Jeopardy style nutrition quiz bowl sound like fun?  Are you interested in clothing buying, construction or design?  Do you enjoy creating art, clothing or décor from duct tape or recyclables?  If you answered, “yes” then the Shelby County 4-H Fashion and Food Projects are for you.

4-H Fashion Project
In the Fashion project, boys and girls grades 3rd through 12th focus on clothing construction, the consumer aspect of purchasing clothing and/or the art of designing clothing and accessories.  Workshop activities include creating art and other projects from duct tape, participating on a team to design a fashion piece from fabric, and learning beginning machine sewing to make a wall hanging (sewing machines and instruction will be provided).  Don’t worry if you’ve never tried these projects before!  If you are at all interested, come and have fun learning and doing.

The Fashion project allows youth the opportunity to make a style of their own, be creative in sewing and designing, use basis sewing skills, develop good consumer skills when making and purchasing clothes, and serve the community by using skills learned in this project. It also focuses on helping young people gain a positive self-concept and be able to confidently put themselves out into the world.

 4-H Food Project
In the 4-H Food project, boys and girls grades 3rd through 12th focus on nutrition, food safety and learning cooking and measuring skills.  This year we will be learning how to can and make jams and jellies, bake delicious holiday treats, participate in a team Chopped Food Challenge, and learn about setting an appetizing table.

How to Participate
The Fashion project is scheduled for Saturday, September 24th from 10:00 am until noon.  We will be creating fashion fun from duct tape.  The Food project will follow from 1:00 to 3:00 pm with learning to can and make hands-on jams and jellies.  Both projects will be held in the Shelby County Courthouse, 2nd floor meeting room.  Come for one or both projects, bring a sack lunch, and have a day of fun, hands-on learning!  Parents are welcome to stay and join in the fun.  There is no fee to participate if you are a current 4-H member.  If not, it’s easy to join!  Just call the Extension office and speak to Daphne to get all the information.
