CAREER EXPLORATION & DISCOVERY EVENT HELD IN HENDERSON
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Students across Panola and Rusk Counties had the opportunity to explore career paths
in a hands-on way at last month's Dream Expo hosted by ETCOG and Workforce Solutions
East Texas Board staff. The event was created in mind with the House Bill 5 changes
requiring students to choose from five career endorsements: Science, Technology,
 Engineering & Mathematics (STEM), Business & Industry, Public Service, Arts & Humanities,
and Multi-Disciplinary Studies.
Students must now choose a career endorsement during their eighth grade year. What
a daunting task! To assist with this change, the Dream Expo gave eighth grade students
from Panola and Rusk counties a chance to explore each of the different endorsements,
speak to people who actually perform the jobs, and get some hands-on experience
with job related equipment.
To get students excited and allow them to dream and discover, the Dream Expo also
had booth participation from a wide array of agencies including, but not limited
 to: public service organizations, business and industry representatives, oil and
gas representatives and continuing education agencies in various fields of study,
including Panola College and Texas State Technical College.
Participating ISDs included: Beckville, Carlisle, Gary, Henderson, Laneville, Leverett's
Chapel, Mt. Enterprise, Overton, Tatum and West Rusk.
