BCFS Health and Human Services-Tyler Honors 2016 Graduates

TYLER - BCFS Health and Human Services-Tyler is partnering with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services to celebrate local youth in foster care who have graduated in 2016.

Tuesday, May 17, 2016 - 6:30 p.m.
Lago del Pino Restaurant
14706 County Rd 1134 - Tyler, TX 75709

The event will feature a keynote address from Pastor Brandon Hall of St. Louis Missionary Baptist Church, followed by a formal proclamation from Tyler City Councilman Darryl Bowdre. Each graduate will receive certificates of congratulations from Texas State Senator Robert Nichols and Texas Governor Gregg Abbott.

"Graduation is an important milestone for anyone, but especially noteworthy for the young adults we work with daily in foster care," says BCFS Program Director Carla McCalope. "Through all the stressors of being a teenager, and handling all the obstacles that life can throw at you, these youth stayed in school and graduated. It's certainly a momentous occasion in their lives!"

The event includes dinner for graduates and their guests, courtesy of Randall and Donna Brooks' Lago del Pino Restaurant, and gift presentations, courtesy of Kohl's and Dillard's, that will include luggage sets and electronics. Project Linus, a national organization that provides handmade blankets to youth in need, will gift blankets to the graduates. Novedades Luly will donate floral arrangements for the graduation ceremony and dinner.

"We are recognizing the hard work of 33 graduates," explains McCalope. "Thirty-two are graduating high school, and one earned an associate degree in kinesiology from Tyler Junior College."

Stephen F. Austin State University, Texas Women's University and Tyler Junior College are just some of the destinations for the graduates.

BCFS-Tyler serves youth in and aging out of foster care, as well as other young adults facing challenges like homelessness, poverty, or those recovering from physical and emotional abuse. The center is a "one-stop shop" that provides counseling, case management, and assistance with education, employment, housing location and medical care.
