US 96 head-on crash takes life of Orange woman, man arrested for Intoxication manslaughter

A two-vehicle head-on accident just inside the San Augustine county line Friday night has taken the life of an Orange woman and has a man in the San Augustine County Jail charged in the incident.
 
DPS Communications in Lufkin says Trooper Jade LaVergne's accident report states, 61-year old Malinda Pond was a passenger in a 2015 Honda Pilot headed southbound on US 96, driven by 61-year old William Pond, also of Orange, when a 2006 Dodge Ram driven by 53-year old Bryan Spurgeon of Orange was northbound and crossed the center stripe striking the Honda head-on.
 
The accident occured at 9:58 p.m., approximately 5 miles north of San Augustine, two miles south of the Shelby County line.
 
Malinda Pond was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:20 p.m. by San Augustine County JP Pct. 4 J.D. Miller. 
 
William Pond was life-flighed to ETMC Tyler and is listed in stable condition.
Spurgeon was taken to CHI St. Luke's Health Memorial in San Augustine, treated and then arrested and charged with Intoxication Manslaughter with a Vehicle. As of late Saturday morning he was waiting to be arraigned.
 
Two passengers in the Pond vehicle, 11-year old Brent Silvers was treated at CHI St. Luke's Health Memorial in San Augustine, and 12-year old Sierra Muse, was taken to University Health in Shreveport. Their condition is not know. They are both from Indianapoli, IN.
