Local Sports Round up 06/25/15; Campbell's "Texas Football" has predictions on upcoming season

The long-time gridiron magazine, “Dave Campbell’s Texas Football” hit the newsstands this week, and the “bible” of Texas football has several local teams making runs at the playoffs.

 

In Dist. 6-4A DII, the Center Roughriders under new head coach Barry Bowman are hoping to better the magazine’s choice which has the team picked No. 5 in a 6-team district. The Riders attempt to turn things around this season after going winless a year ago.

In Dist. 10-2A DI, Campbell has the Shelbyville Dragons No. 2 behind a loaded West Sabine squad, while the Joaquin Rams are No. 3, and the San Augustine Wolves No. 4. Shelbyville running back Octavian Burrell has been tabbed the preseason district offensive MVP. There’s a lot of talent in this district. With new head coaches, Joaquin and San Augustine are going to make it interesting.

Meanwhile in Dist. 11-2A DII, the Tenaha Tigers, with new head coach Craig Horn, are to repeat as district champions after ending as regional finalist last season. Tenaha is picked to be region champs as well. Tiger Wide receiver Colton Goeke is the preseason offensive MVP. The Timpson Bears are No. 2, and according to Campbell, are one of five dark horses in Class 2A to possibly make a run for a state championship after losing in the bi-district round a year ago. Timpson lineback Hunter Smith is the preseason MVP.

Center Lady Rider Athletic camps set

The Center Lady Roughrider Athletic Program is hosting a Volleyball Camp on July 6th-9th from 8:00 AM-12:00 PM at the Center High School Gym. It is for Incoming 5th graders through 9th graders. The cost will be $20 for individuals or $35 for two children families. Pre-registration is from now until June 29th.

 

The Center Lady Roughrider Athletic Program is hosting a Basketball Camp on July 27th-30th from 8:00 AM-12:00 PM at the Center High School Gym. It is for Incoming 5th graders through 9th graders. The cost will be $20 for individuals or $35 for two children families. Pre-registration is from now until July 20th.

Timpson Frontier Day Washer Board Tournament

A Washer Board tournament will be among the activities at the annual Timpson Frontier Days on Saturday, July 4. The tourney is for two-person teams, consisting of any age and gender. It’s a double-elimination style bracket and will start at 11 a.m. in downtown Timpson. Cost is $10 per team with 80 percent payout to first-place, 20 percent to second place. Pre-registration is required no later than 5 p.m. July 1. There will be NO registration allowed the day of the tournament. What-A-Melon 5K/Walk set for July 11

Center Rotary Club is gearing up for their annual What-A-Melon 5K/ Walk event which will be held on Saturday, July 11th. Each year, Center Rotary Club donates a major portion of the events funds to a local non-profit organization. This year’s funds will go towards the Shelby County Outreach Ministries. Everyone is encouraged to come out and participate in this fun family event. The event will be held at the Center Square. The fun run will begin at 7:00AM and the 5K at 7:30AM. Both events are for people of all ages. You can walk or run either event. Strollers are acceptable. T-shirts will be available for the first 150 participants. Packet pickup will be held at All Hours Fitness on Friday, July 10 from 5PM – 6:30PM and Saturday, July 11 from 6AM-6:45AM. Registrations are available at Shelby Savings Bank, All Hours Fitness and Shelby County Outreach Ministries. Registration is also available (and preferred) online at www.onestoprace.com.
