Timpson city leaders continue squabble over possible police department RIF

Two members of the Timpson City Council walked out of last night’s meeting, reportedly at the advice of their legal counsel.

Our Town Times newspaper is reporting online that Mayor Debra Smith and Councilman Kyle Allen removed themselves when talk resumed on the possible reduction in the city’s police force.

The article says Councilman Ronnie Wolfe, who has led the charge to see a reduction in officers, responded to Texas Municipal Police Association Lead Field Representative Noel Johnson, who was said to be involved in open records requests and investigation into the possible RIF. The two reportedly had a heated exchange over the issue.

The meeting agenda included possible action on designating a separate checking account for the police department.

Wolfe told the audience the PD’s expenses come from the General Fund, and separating would allow for improved checks and balances. Wolfe says the city is losing over $150,000 annually with five officers. No action was taken on that item since it was not known if the meeting could continue with only three council members remaining.

Mayor Smith advised online later that a quorum was present after she and Allen left the meeting.
