Motorist should be alert to potential flooding with tropical storm approaching

LUFKIN  - A weak low pressure area is expected to reach the Texas coast on Tuesday with heavy rain likely over much of the nine-county TxDOT Lufkin District that could cause localized flooding on some roadways.

The storm, referred to as Invest 91-L by the National Hurricane Center, is poised to deliver torrential rain and possible flash flooding this week over much of the gulf coast and could move through the deep East Texas area or possibly east into Louisiana Tuesday and Wednesday.

If this occurs, motorists should be alert to low-lying areas that are prone to fast-rising flood waters near rivers, creeks and/or over roadways. TxDOT will provide up-to-the-minute transportation news and local information for the Lufkin District throughout the rain event.

"We will continue to use Twitter feeds and Facebook to deliver storm information and road or lane closures due to heavy rainfall," said Rhonda Oaks, public information officer for the Lufkin District. "TxDOT offers current roadway conditions as far as closures, construction or flooded areas for the entire state anytime on drivetexas.org. We hope everyone will stay informed if they must drive during this weather event."

TxDOT reminds motorists that flooding is the leading cause of weather-related deaths in Texas. As little as six inches of water can float some vehicles. If you encounter a flooded road "Turn Around, Don't Drown" and remember:

  *   Never walk, swim or drive through swift water.
  *   Stay informed about weather conditions.
  *   If your vehicle stalls in water, leave it and move to higher ground if you can do so safely.
  *   Do not move barriers blocking a low-water crossing. Penalties range from $200 to $1,000.
