Entertainment to Highlight Festival---By Linda Goller

An entire day of fun-filled entertainment is a highlight of the 1st annual Texas Treasures Heritage Festival sponsored by San Augustine Main Street on Saturday, May 2 from 9 am until 5 pm. The historic San Augustine Courthouse and its square will be captivated by a day-long heritage enriched program of music and storytelling at the Pavilion on the square.

The Master of Ceremony, Marshall McMillan, will open the day as Mayor Leroy Hughes welcomes all to historic, progressive San Augustine.

The day begins at the Pavilion with "Texas Heritage Celebration Songs" with Sharon Hodges and Texas Blue. Rememberances galore will flood back with songs like "Deep in the Heart of Texas" and many more.

The East Texas Square Dancing Club from Lufkin will have us clapping and wanting to join in.  John and Betty Oglesbee will tell some great stories about our heritage and their lives in this town.  Shane and Sara, our resident  C&W professionals, will fiddle, play, and sing "Songs of
the West".

One of our favorite teachers, Willie Faye Garrett will come to the stage to sing some inspirational, wonderful spirituals and tell the story of her life.

Vonzella Garner, who shared her family's story at the 180th birthday party last year, will again share and talk about the old times some of us do not remember.

A familiar face and voice to us, Charles Delaney, will sing "Songs of the 30's and 40"s, which will include love songs, World War II tunes, and others.

Another great storyteller from my youth, Julia Wade and her daughter, Lisa Crouch, will
portray their stories in drama and speech.

The Nacogdoches Rhythm Rockers Cloggers will kick their feet in rhythm and probably bring us to our feet with excitement.

The San Augustine Youth Praise Choir will move us as they sing their choices of spiritual praise.

A new musical treat will be brought to us by Rodney Barger, a Jasper resident, who will introduce us to the Native American Flute.  He plays 15 different flutes which has become his passion.  He is an accomplished flutist and is one of the newest recording artists in the flute music area.  His concerts are labeled "Rodney and his Magical Flute" and he also encourages audience participation.

Not only will there be a day of music and stories, but you must
walk across the street to the General Store.

Weldon McDaniel, a resident Hemphill historian, will present four educational programs throughout the day.  The topics will be announced next week.

Stay tuned for a schedule and exact times of each performance and/or program in the next Tribune.  You will totally enjoy the San Augustine Main Street's 1st annual Texas Treasures Heritage Festival on Saturday, May 2.

And there is much more!
