Ceremony marks 10th anniversary of helicopter crash in Sabine National Forest

A remembrance ceremony was held in Shelby County a week ago to honor the three men who lost their lives in a helicopter crash 10-years ago while doing contract prescribed burning operations for the U.S. Forest Service near Shelbyville.

The event was held at Boles Field March 11 to recognize the sacrifice given by Pilot Jose Victor Gonzalez and passengers John Greeno and Charles Edgar on that date in 2005. They were the only occupants of the aircraft.

The helicopter had flown all morning, then refueled to fly in the afternoon over the Sabine National Forest when it crashed.

On hand for the ceremony were Forest Service, Texas Parks and Wildlife, family members and friends.

A moment of silence was observed at 2 p.m. honoring the men.
