UPDATE: National Weather Service summary of Winter Warning & Advisory areas for upcoming system

The following is a summary of the NWS Winter Weather updates on the previous Warning and Advisory areas for Texas.

Warning areas currently are for the I 20 corridor and North.
The weather will begin somewhere around mid might to 2:00 am with sleet and freezing rain, but quickly transition to all snow. 2-4 inches of snow is anticipated on top of already slushy roads that will freeze as temperatures drop tonight.  The snow event is due to the cooling of the atmosphere from the upper to lower areas.  The main impacts are roadways, but trees and power lines will likely feel the impacts due to the wet, heavy snow.  This area is not expected to get much above freezing all day Wednesday.  The event will move out of the area by 6 pm tomorrow. Ground temps are at 40 degrees and are continuing to drop.  Any snow pack will continue the drop of the groud temps and cause even more problems in to Thursday as high temperatures will only reach the low 40s.

Advisory area is South of I 20 down to Lufkin to Huntsville to Waco and on to the West.
This area does include Deep East Texas and the area is not expected to get much above freezing all day Wednesday. 32-34 degrees is all.. and will quickly refreeze Wednesday evening.

Our current ground temp is 42 degrees, and that will continue to drop with the colder temps hanging around. Our winds will remain from the NNE blowing over the snow and slush covered areas from our North keeping our temps down tonight and all day Wednesday. Any frozen stuff or snow cover will further drop the ground and air temps.

The low pressure system from the New Mexico and West Texas is moving rapidly our direction.  We will see rain, freezing rain, and sleet with the rapid transition to snow. Here the NWS forecast reflects 1-2 inches of snow. If it falls over ice, it will become a much  greater issue. The impact will be trees, power lines, bridges and overpasses as this will be wet and heavy laden snow.

We should clear the skies enough on Thursday to melt the winter mix we do have on the ground with temperatures rising in to the mid 40's.

Warmer temperatures and rain are in the 7 day forecast toward the week end.....But lets get thru this winter event first.
