Local Sports Round up 02/23/15; Complete area high school basketball coverage

High School Basketball:

 

Girls’ Playoffs:

 

Class 2A:

 

The Shelbyville Lady Dragons notched a 36-31 area championship win over the Broaddus Lady Bulldogs in Hemphill Friday night to advance to the region quarterfinal round to take on Cushing at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Hudson. Cushing beat Dallardsville Big Sandy, 43-40. The Shelbyville-Cushing winner has the Cayuga-LaPoynor winner in the region semi-finals later this week.

 

The Tenaha Lady Tigers will play Evadale at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Lufkin Middle School Gym in a regional quarterfinal contest. Evadale beat Carlisle, 66-37 in area to advance. The winner of Tenaha-Evadale has the winner of Lovelady-Hubbard in the region semi-finals.

 

Class 3A:

 

The Garrison Lady Bulldogs saw their season end Friday night, as Anahuac takes a 51-43 win in the area round at Woodville. Anahuac advances to the region semi-finals where they will play Central Heights, a 54-24 winner over Buna. Central Heights vs. Anauhac, 7 p.m. tonight, Livingston.

 

Woden girls lose to East Chambers, 38-35 in area play.

 

Class A:

 

The Chireno Lady Owls beat Abbott, 59-31, and advance to the region quarterfinals where they will play Coolidge at 7 p.m. Tuesday at U-T Tyler Patriot Center.

 

Boys' Basketball:

 

The Center Roughriders win the Dist. 19-4A playoff seeding “play-in” tie-breaker against Tatum, 54-49, in Gary Friday night, and will be the #1 seed in post-season. The Riders will play a bi-district game against Jasper at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Rusk. Tatum will play Huntington.

 

The Shelbyville Dragons have a first-round bye by virtue of winning district, and they’ll play the winner of the West Sabine-Evadale bi-district game to see who they’ll play in area later this week.

 

The Tenaha Tigers will take on Cushing in a Class 2A bi-district game at 6 p.m. tonight, Monday in Cushing. Tickets are $5/$3. The winner will meet Dist. 23-2A Champ San Augustine in the area round. Tenaha took a 75-58 win over Quinlan Boles in Arp Friday in a playoff warm-up game.

 

The Timpson Bears will play Carlisle in a 2A first-round playoff game at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Tatum ISD.  Ticket Prices: Adults $4 Students $3. The winner will take on Dallardsville Big Sandy in area.

 

Also in a 3A bi-district games, Central Heights vs. Trinity, 7:45 p.m. Tuesday, Lufkin Middle School; and Woden vs. Crockett, 6 p.m. Tuesday, Angelina College, Lufkin.

 

In Class A bi-district, Chireno vs. Coolidge

 

Power Lifting:

 

The Shelbyville Lady Dragon Powerlifting Team finished in First Place as a team at the Center Powerlifting Meet last Thursday. 1st place finishers were Kaitlin Campbell, Cleosha Jeter, Hannah Hall, Savannah Talbert, Kamaryn Smith, Harlie Hagler, and Katie Casey. Harlie Hagler earned ''Best Lifter'' Award on the heavy weight platform.

 

The Shelbyville Dragons Power Lifting team placed third as a team at the Center Meet. First place went to Kal Metcalf in the 242 lb. division. He also was named Best Lifter Heavy Platform. Octavian Burrell was first in 198.

 

Soccer:

 

The Center Riders and Lady Riders will return to action at home against Hudson tomorrow, Tuesday, Feb. 24.

 

Baseball: (Weather Permitting)

 

The Center Roughrider Baseball teams are scheduled to open the season today at home against perennial Class 3A power, Central Heights. Game time is 4:30 p.m. with JV followed by Varsity.

 

The Riders will play in the Palestine Tournament Thursday through Saturday. On Thursday the Riders play at 1230 and 530 at Elkhart, and on Friday at 4 p.m. in Elkhart and 7 p.m. in Palestine

 

The Rider JV will be at the Central Heights Tournament, playing at 12:15 p.m. and 4:45 p.m.

 

The Center Roughrider Baseball program's benefit Hit-a-Thon was postponed and rescheduled for Saturday, March 21. For more contact Rider Head Coach David Sheppherd at Center High School.

 

The Shelbyville Dragons will open up at state champion Douglass beginning with JV at 5 p.m. and Varsity at 7 p.m. today, weather permitting.

 

Also, weather permitting; the Joaquin Rams go to Waskom for their season opener today at 6 p.m.

 

Softball:

 

The Center Lady Riders are home to play Central Heights Tuesday with action starting with JV at 4:30 p.m.

 

The Shelbyville Lady Dragons go to the Joaquin Lady Rams Tuesday at 4 p.m.

The Garrison Lady Bulldogs are home against East Texas Christian Academy at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

 

College Hoops:

 

The SFA Lady Jacks and Lumberjacks both take Southland Conference wins over Nicholls State Saturday. The Lumberjacks, 86-71, and LadyJacks, 68-59.  SFA men will host Lamar at 7 p.m. tonight. The ladies take on Incarnate Word at 7 p.m. Thursday in Nacogdoches.

 

 

The 8th annual Logansport Chamber of Commerce Sand Bass Tournament on the Sabine River in Logansport is scheduled for March 14. First prize is $5,000; second $2,000; and third is $1,500. The prize for “Big Bass” is a pool, dependent on the number of registered teams. Entry fee is $150 per team, with an optional $50 per team for Big Bass. Logansport is recognized as the Sand Bass Fishing Capital of the World. Fishermen can obtain get registration forms online at the Facebook page SAND BASS TOURNAMENT, or on the Town of Logansport Chamber of Commerce website. Participants are urged to register early since it may be necessary to restrict to 200 teams. The Shelby County Bass Anglers will conduct the weigh-in. There will be a pre-tournament Fish Fry on March 13. It’s open to the public and will be held along the Logansport Riverfront with an auction and door prizes included.
