VA Grant to assist veterans with doctor visits awarded to San Augustine County, will also help Shelby & Sabine County Vets

It was announced at yesterday’s San Augustine County Commissioners’ Court meeting that a $15,000 Veterans Administration General Assistance Grant has been awarded for use by veterans in San Augustine, Sabine and Shelby Counties.

County Judge’s Administrative Assistant Sandy Jenkins says funds provide fuel assistance to veterans, their spouses and those that may help transport veterans to their doctor’s appointments in Lufkin, Houston or Shreveport.

Ms. Jenkins noted San Augustine County included Shelby and Sabine Counties in the application process this year.

Veterans needing the assistance should contact Ms. Jenkins at 275-2762 or San Augustine County Interim and Shelby County Veterans Officer Sherry Riley at 288-3091 or in Shelby County at 598-6530.

Commissioners also approved a request by The Delta Kappa Gamma Society to place a “Cell Phones for Soldiers” collection box in the San Augustine County Courthouse. The non-profit organization provides cost-free communication services to active-duty military members and veterans.

In addition, the county will share the cost of insurance premiums for the new district attorney’s investigator with Sabine County. Ms. Jenkins says current investigator James Walker will be retiring next week.
