Fire hydrant struck by motorist in Center results in reduced water pressure Friday evening

Water pressure to a portion of the City of Center was reduced last Friday evening when a vehicle hit and destroyed a fire hydrant at the entrance to the former Shelby Regional Hospital on Hurst Street.

City Manager Chad Nehring said because of the water flow out of the line supplying the hydrant, pressure was reduced to the north end of town for a short period.

He said once a utility crew was on-site, locating and closing the valve took less than 20 minutes and pressure was immediately returned to normal conditions.

Nehring added there were no outages from the mishap.

The identity of the driver striking the hydrant was not known.
