Local Sports Round up 12/22/14; Riders named to football all-district, Center takes fifth in Tatum tourney

Two Center Football Roughriders have received all-district recognition from coaches of Dist. 6-4A, Div. II. Octavius Evans picked-up two honors--second team receiver and utility player. Joseph Fentress was named to special teams.

 

In high school basketball:

The Center Roughriders win two of three games in the Tatum tournament taking fifth-place. After defeating Spring Hill Thursday, 65-56, the Riders faced a tough Marshall team and lost 47-70. The Riders had no problem with New Boston on Saturday, taking a 55-17 win. Octavius Evans was named all-tournament.

 

All Rider basketball teams will be in Hallsville today with games starting at 1 p.m.

The #10 state-ranked San Augustine Wolves were dealt a loss by 4A Hudson Friday night, 44-69. The Wolves will be home to host Class 2A #3 state-ranked Martins Mill starting with JV at 5 p.m. this afternoon.

 

The Tenaha Tigers played in the Martins Mill Tourney going winning two of five games. Tenaha opened with back-to-back losses to state-ranked Martins Mill (42-67) & Paradise (47-36), before coming back to beat Callisburg, 65-57 Friday night. On Saturday, the Tigers defeated Lindsay, 67-48, and lost to Clarksville, 58-75 in the championship game of the "white" bracket.

 

Martinsville Pirates beat the Broaddus Bulldogs, 57-41; Chireno Owls over Apple Springs, 99-73; and the state-ranked Chireno Lady Owls beat Apple Springs, 52-36.

 

The Joaquin Rams and Lady Rams will host Brookeland at 2 p.m. this afternoon.

 

The Tenaha ISD will host the 6th annual Holiday Hoops Scholarship Classic December 29, 30, and 31. Forty of the state’s top boys and girls Class 1A, 2A, and 3A programs will descend upon Tenaha for an opportunity to battle it out on the hardwood for what has become one of Texas’ top invitational tournament trophies. The tourney will include 71 games over three days being played in Tenaha, Gary, Joaquin and Carthage. Games tip-off at 8 a.m. Monday, Dec. 29.
