Local attorney Lynda K. Russell honored for pro bono work

Local attorney Lynda K. Russell was presented the 2014 Most Pro Bono Cases Litigated Award during a ceremony Thursday morning at the Shelby County Courthouse.

Making the presentation was Private Attorney Involvement Coordinator with Lone Star Legal Aid, Dana G. Bias.

It marks the first time the award has been given to a Shelby County attorney.

Ms. Bias said Ms. Russell has volunteered through their program since she opened her private practice in 2012 and has consistently gone above and beyond the call of duty.

Ms. Russell said she was humbled by the award. She told us she really don't deserve it any more than the other attorneys, saying they all probably do pro bono work as well, so she likes to feel it’s an award for all local attorneys.

Ms. Russell said,”I always felt like God's plan for me was to help others when I could, so I am only doing what I feel I was put here to do. I love every minute of it and I love to know that in some little way I might have helped someone along the way.”

The ceremony took place in 273rd District Judge Charles Mitchell’s courtroom. Attending the presentation was Judge Mitchell, 123rd District Judge Charles “Brick” Dickerson, Ms. Russell’s husband, Phil Hennigan, her mother, Edrie Parson and Ms. Russell’s sister-in-law, Mary Ann Parsons.

Ms. Russell is a former Shelby County District Attorney.
