City of Center "officially" opens MLK Drive after renovation with chamber ribbon cutting this morning

To mark the reconstruction completion and opening of Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive in Center, the City of Center and the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors are holding a ribbon cutting at 11:30 a.m. this morning at the intersection of Hicks Street and MLK Drive, at the four-way stop near Hicks Mortuary.

It was announced last week that the roadway was open to all traffic.

City Manager Chad Nehring said the city received a $1.1 million FEMA grant for the work, and without the funds it would have cost the city taxpayers millions of dollars to reconstruct the street.

Mayor David Chadwick said MLK is very important in that it connects Shelbyville Street and the loop and provides access to homes, businesses and other parts of the city.

Mayor Chadwick added the reconstruction project provided an opportunity for other work in the area, such as the rail spur crossing MLK.

The mayor said the city's Economic Development for Street Improvements is planning a sizable contribution toward funding a sidewalk project for MLK Drive.
